Belihuloya is one of the most beautiful mountain villages located in the Ratnapura District of Sri Lanka. This little mountain village is situated at the bottom of the world’s end which is part of the Horton plains national park. This village consists of dry and wet zones as well as mountainous and lowland areas at an altitude of less than 1500 m with elevation of 616m above sea level. The Belihuloya locale is a home to wet semi-evergreen forests, tropical forests, dry deciduous grasslands and mountainous tropical forests. High peaks, mountain valleys, waterfalls, rivers, tiny mountain villages, farms and Samanala reservoir make this beautiful village a wonderful hotspot for nature tourists.
The Biodiversity of Belihuloya
Researchers in have identified Belihuloya as a place located in biogeographical transition zone in south-central Sri Lanka that is being threatened by land-use changes. Observations have identified 36 species of Odonates (22 dragonflies and 14 damselflies) representing ten families, with ten Sri Lankan endemics. Belihuloya is home to four species of dragonflies and eight damselflies are nationally threatened, including critically endangered Elattoneura centralis and endangered Libellago greeni. In addition to these, Belihuloya is a home to many endemic flora and fauna in three different climatic conditions.
Tourist Attractions
Belihuloya offers wonderful opportunities for the nature lovers to enjoy some iconic nature trails and trekking experiences like Devil’s stare case and Baker’s bend. The highest waterfall, Bambarakanda and the second highest waterfall Diyaluma are also located within a close proximity to Belihuloya. The 2nd century ruins of the Kuragala rock cave offers another fascinating walk along antiquity. An archaeological reserve, excavations had unearthed two pre-historic skeletons of males and other artefacts in this cave. The site is revered by Buddhists and Muslims, with the presence of a temple and a mosque.
